The 2026/2027 season is the 64th edition of the Bundesliga. The competition began on 28 August 2026, with the final matchday scheduled for 22 May 2027. This year’s campaign is taking place somewhat later than usual due to the post-World Cup calendar. The first half of the season features 14 matchdays, and Bundesliga action will resume on 8 January after the winter break.
Bayern Munich enter the season as reigning German champions. Vincent Kompany’s side underwent several changes over the summer but still boast a very strong squad. Among those to arrive in Munich were Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown, while Leon Goretzka, João Palhinha and Raphaël Guerreiro were among those to leave the club.
Bayern have therefore retained the core of the team while making a few changes to the squad. Kompany can now call on a greater number of versatile players while gradually increasing the role of younger footballers. With a congested fixture schedule, squad depth will be particularly important in the event of injuries and suspensions.
Borussia Dortmund begin the season after finishing second in the previous campaign. Niko Kovač remains in charge, and the club has once again opted for a blend of youth and experience. Among those to join Dortmund were Greece internationals Konstantinos Karetsas and Giannis Konstantelias, as well as Dutchman Joey Veerman. Late in the transfer window, the club also loaned Ethan Nwaneri from Arsenal.
Changes were needed in part because several players departed. Julian Brandt left for Ajax, while Karim Adeyemi joined Barcelona. Borussia remain focused on developing young players, but also need sufficient squad depth to compete on several fronts.
Several significant changes have also taken place at other Bundesliga clubs. RB Leipzig lost Yan Diomandé, who moved to Real Madrid. The club responded by signing Rocco Reitz, Neil El Aynaoui and Marc Guiu, among others, and by bringing Christopher Nkunku back from AC Milan on loan.
SC Freiburg said goodbye to Johan Manzambi, who joined Aston Villa after an excellent season. The club brought in Yannick Engelhardt and Keisuke Gotō, among others, to replace him. Hoffenheim, meanwhile, lost Bazoumana Touré to Newcastle United and strengthened their attack with Patrick Wimmer and Adam Daghim.
Schalke 04’s return is one of the major talking points of the new season. The Gelsenkirchen club spent three years outside the Bundesliga before winning the 2. Bundesliga in 2025/2026 and securing automatic promotion. Schalke’s main task now will be to adapt the squad to the demands of the top flight. Several experienced players, including Edin Džeko, Robin Gosens and Maximilian Wöber, are expected to help.
SV Elversberg’s situation is far more unusual. The club earned promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in its history, becoming the smallest town ever represented in the competition. Promotion alone was a major achievement, and Elversberg can now test its model for building a team against much bigger clubs.
The third promoted side is SC Paderborn 07, who returned to the Bundesliga after winning the playoff against Wolfsburg. The club will be playing in the top flight for the third time and must once again build a squad capable of competing with teams that have bigger budgets.
The new Bundesliga season promises to be exciting for reasons beyond the battle at the top. Several teams behind the favourites will be looking to take a step forward after successful previous campaigns, while others will try to rediscover their form after disappointing seasons. Many squad changes were made over the summer, so it will be important to see how quickly the new-look teams settle in after transfers and managerial changes. The fight for survival will also attract plenty of attention, particularly as the three promoted sides begin the season with very different circumstances and levels of Bundesliga experience.
