17 September 2026

The 2026/2027 season is another edition of France’s Ligue 1, with 18 teams set to compete. The campaign began in August, with the final round scheduled for 29 May 2027. There were many changes at individual clubs ahead of the season, particularly in the dugouts. As many as 12 of the 18 teams began the new campaign with a different manager than the previous season—a record in the 21st century.

PSG the league’s main attraction

Paris Saint-Germain enter the season as French champions. Luis Enrique’s side have won the previous three league titles in a row, and in the 2026/2027 season the Spanish coach could become the first manager to win the French title four times consecutively.

The Parisians are coming off a successful season, although the battle for top spot was more demanding than in previous years. PSG still have a very strong squad, featuring the likes of Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué. The club therefore has no need for a major overhaul. The priority remains maintaining a high level while competing on several fronts.

Lens and Lille aim to stay among the leaders

RC Lens finished second in Ligue 1 last season and won the Coupe de France for the first time in the club’s history. As a result, the club earned direct entry to the Champions League league phase. However, there have been changes to the squad over the summer, and combining domestic competition with European football will be an additional challenge. Lens have started the season with a new manager for the third consecutive time.

Lille finished third last season, returning to the league podium after several years. Lille also secured direct entry to the Champions League. Both clubs will be looking to stay near the top, although playing in Europe could make it harder for them to pick up points consistently in the league.

Lyon, Marseille and Monaco face new challenges

Olympique Lyon finished fourth last season, earning the chance to fight for a place in the Champions League. The club has also changed managers, so quickly implementing his ideas will be important.

Olympique Marseille finished fifth last season and begin this campaign in the Europa League. The club has also changed managers, with Bruno Génésio appointed as the new head coach. Marseille remain one of France’s best-known clubs, and this season they will be aiming for a high finish in Ligue 1.

AS Monaco finished seventh, but thanks to Lens’ Coupe de France triumph, they have the chance to play in the Conference League qualifying rounds. They are another club to start the season with a new manager. With so many changes, it is difficult to judge how quickly some of the leading teams will adapt to the new circumstances.

Record number of managerial changes

One of the main talking points ahead of the season was the unprecedented number of changes in the dugouts. As many as 12 clubs decided to appoint a new manager. Among those to bring in new coaches were Lens, Lyon, Marseille, Monaco, Lille, Nice and Auxerre.

Some teams are embarking on a longer rebuild, while others are hoping for an immediate improvement in results. In the opening rounds, attention will focus on how quickly the teams take on board their new tactical approaches. As many as eight of the coaches starting new jobs have never previously managed a team in Ligue 1.

New teams in Ligue 1

Three new teams have joined the top flight for the 2026/2027 season: FC Lorient, ESTAC Troyes and Le Mans FC. Lorient return to Ligue 1 after a one-year absence, Troyes after several seasons away, while Le Mans are back among France’s top clubs after earning promotion from Ligue 2.

For the promoted sides, adapting to the level of Ligue 1 will be key. However, they differ in experience and financial resources, so each club starts the season from a different position.

Ligue 1 ahead of the new season

PSG begin the season as the clear favourites, but the picture behind them is far more open. Lens and Lille want to build on last season’s performances, Lyon and Marseille are looking to return to the very top, while Monaco are seeking to rebuild their standing after a disappointing campaign.

On top of that, there is a record number of managerial changes. Much will depend on how quickly the new coaching staffs can shape their teams. PSG continue to set the standard their rivals aspire to, but the race for the remaining places and European qualification remains wide open.
