FC Augsburg: 2026/27 season preview

FC Augsburg begin the 2026/2027 season after a strong finish to the previous campaign. The team ended the season in ninth place, despite sitting just three points above the relegation zone in December. Much of the credit goes to Manuel Baum, who took charge after Sandro Wagner and quickly improved the team’s results. The German has been appointed permanently, signing a contract until 2028. This season, Augsburg’s main aim is to maintain consistency and finish in the top half of the table again.

Baum is building the team in his own image

Baum’s return proved to be a key moment in the previous season. The coach knows the club very well, having already managed Augsburg between 2016 and 2019. Under his guidance, the team began playing with a back three, most often in a 3-4-3 formation, with long passes and competing for second balls becoming defining features of their game.

Augsburg lost several players responsible for defensive duties over the summer, including Dimitris Giannoulis, Cédric Zesiger, Kristijan Jakić and Kevin Schlotterbeck, but also brought in players capable of challenging for a place in the starting lineup straight away. Calvin Brackelmann, Yannik Keitel, Hennes Behrens, Sima Suso and Young-woo Seol joined the team.

Gregoritsch returns permanently

The most significant transfer remains the permanent signing of Michael Gregoritsch. The Austrian spent the second half of the previous season on loan at Augsburg from Brøndby and quickly became an important figure in attack. He scored six goals and provided three assists in 17 appearances.

The 32-year-old striker is a good fit for Baum’s preferred style of play. His physical presence allows him to hold up long passes, win aerial duels and set up attacks for his teammates. His arrival also gives Augsburg a more direct attacking option.

Kade among the leaders of a young team

One of Augsburg’s biggest discoveries last season was Anton Kade. The 22-year-old winger scored six goals and added an assist, making the most of his pace and ability to find space in the penalty area. Baum believes he can take another step forward.

Mert Kömür and Noahkai Banks also remain important members of the team. Augsburg want to develop young players while building the side around more experienced footballers. Fabian Rieder could play a key role in midfield, having been moved deeper by Baum. The Swiss player forms a partnership in that area with, among others, Han-Noah Massengo.

Seol and Ibrahimović add options

One of Augsburg’s late signings was Youngwoo Seol. The 27-year-old South Korea international joined from Crvena Zvezda Belgrade and signed a contract until 2030. He can play on either flank and previously made more than 100 appearances for the Serbian club, including in European competitions. He is therefore expected to bring international experience to the young squad.

Towards the end of the transfer window, Augsburg also signed Arijon Ibrahimović on loan from Bayern Munich. The 20-year-old German can play in several attacking positions. Last season he featured for Heidenheim, making 34 appearances in all competitions. He joins Augsburg for a year with an option to buy.

Another step forward after a strong finish

Augsburg have a season ahead in which consistency will be crucial. The club finished the previous campaign in ninth place, but just a few months earlier had been fighting to climb out of the bottom half of the table. Baum has been given time to shape his own team and can draw on a squad that combines experience with youth.

The summer signings have not completely changed the team’s character, but they have added options in several positions. If Augsburg can maintain the organisation and intensity they showed in the second half of last season, they will once again be able to target a place in the top half of the Bundesliga.
