Strasbourg begin the 2026/2027 season after finishing eighth in Ligue 1. The previous campaign was a success, not least because of their European adventure. The team reached the semi-finals of the Conference League. Strasbourg are once again backing a young squad, but the summer brought plenty of change. Another coach, Gary O’Neil, left the club, with Portuguese manager Hugo Oliveira taking his place. Several players who had a major influence on the team’s performances also departed, making it a considerable challenge to maintain their previous level.
Oliveira joins Strasbourg after working at Famalicão, where his side finished fifth in the Portuguese league. He has signed a three-year contract and is expected to continue developing the team around young, promising players. Strasbourg head into another season with a new coach, however, and every player will have to buy into his ideas from the outset. Building stability quickly will be crucial, especially as the team will now focus exclusively on Ligue 1 and the domestic cups.
Strasbourg lost several important players over the summer. Emmanuel Emegha moved to Chelsea after a successful spell in Alsace. The Dutch striker stood out for his physical strength and mobility. Valentín Barco also headed to London, having brought creativity and versatility to the midfield. Chelsea also recalled Mike Penders after his loan spell ended. The Belgian had performed well in goal, so his departure means a change between the posts.
Diego Moreira, one of the team’s most talented wingers, joined AC Milan. His dribbling and technique helped create goalscoring chances. Bayer Leverkusen, meanwhile, signed Guéla Doué, an important player on the right side of defence. Julio Enciso also left Strasbourg, moving to Ipswich Town. Ben Chilwell said goodbye to the club as well, returning to the Premier League after a year in Strasbourg and joining Crystal Palace.
Strasbourg responded to the changes by bringing in another group of young players. The most recognisable new arrival is Giovanni Reyna, an American attacking midfielder with experience in the Bundesliga and at international level. After a difficult spell at Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach, he will be looking to regain regular playing time.
Karim Coulibaly from Werder Bremen and Portuguese midfielder Diogo Sousa from Vitória Guimarães have also joined the club. Fábio Baldé, signed from Hamburger SV, has strengthened the attack. Another new striker is Deivid Washington, who moved from Chelsea. Goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen and defender Genesis Antwi have also arrived on loan from the London club. Jacobo Ortega, who came from Real Madrid’s reserves, has also joined the attack, while Jeyland Mitchell is expected to increase competition in defence.
Strasbourg’s model is based on developing young players and introducing them to the first team quickly. Last season, the team were among the youngest in Europe’s top leagues and showed that a youthful squad can compete effectively. The challenge remains the high turnover, which regularly forces the club to fill key positions. Among those who stayed, captain Ismaël Doukouré, Sebastian Nanasi and Martial Godo will have important roles. Their partnerships with the new arrivals will be vital after the summer departures.
Strasbourg are coming off a season that brought an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1 and a European semi-final. The club once again sold several key players over the summer and changed coaches, but invested in more young talent. Much will depend on how quickly Oliveira can build a cohesive team and whether Reyna and the other new arrivals can fill the gaps left by those who departed. Repeating such a successful season will not be easy, so the first priority should be maintaining stability in the league and developing the new squad.
