Lille begin the 2026/2027 season after finishing third in Ligue 1. The team collected 61 points and returned to the league’s top three for the first time since winning the title in 2021. This secured direct qualification for the Champions League league phase. However, several significant changes took place over the summer. Bruno Génésio left when his contract expired, and the club sold several key players. Davide Ancelotti has taken charge of the team, with the task of keeping Lille near the top of the league despite the squad overhaul.
The 36-year-old Italian signed a two-year deal. He spent years working as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant at Bayern, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid, and took charge of Botafogo in his own right in 2025. Lille have not opted for a complete overhaul, but the new coach will have to introduce his own ideas. He has promised attacking football and tactical flexibility. Getting the team to gel quickly will be especially important, not only because of the domestic competition but also because of their participation in the Champions League.
The biggest outgoing transfer was Ayyoub Bouaddi’s move to Manchester City. The 18-year-old midfielder, a Lille academy graduate and one of France’s most promising young players, was sold for a fee close to 100 million euros. It is a huge financial boost for the club, but it will be difficult to replace on the pitch a player who brought dynamism to midfield and could dictate the tempo of play.
Matias Fernández-Pardo, meanwhile, moved to Newcastle United. The English club paid around 60 million euros for him. The Belgian forward made 71 appearances for Lille and scored 12 goals. He could play in several attacking positions, so his departure has reduced the number of options available up front. among others, Thomas Meunier, Aïssa Mandi and Chancel Mbemba also left the club.
Ayase Ueda has joined the attack from Feyenoord. The Japanese forward will compete for a place in the side with Olivier Giroud, who extended his contract for another season. Başar Önal from NEC Nijmegen has also joined Lille. The Turkish winger relies on his pace and direct style of play, which could prove useful following Fernández-Pardo’s departure.
Maurits Kjærgaard has arrived from Salzburg to bolster midfield. The Dane is expected to help replace Bouaddi, although it would be difficult to expect one signing to solve all the problems caused by the young Moroccan’s departure. Ancelotti will also be able to call on Hákon Haraldsson and Ngal'ayela Mukau. Nabil Bentaleb has also stayed at the club, having extended his contract until 2028.
After several experienced defenders left, Lille signed Tanguy Nianzou from Sevilla. The 24-year-old previously played for Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. He has the physical attributes to compete at centre-back, but his career so far has been hampered by injury problems. Regular appearances will be important both for his own development and for the needs of his new team.
Lille have signed 19-year-old Louna Srdanović from Servette to strengthen the right side of defence. He is a young player who will have to adapt to the demands of the French league. Lille have also brought in Orlando Gill from San Lorenzo to bolster their goalkeeping options.
After finishing third, Lille will be aiming to challenge for the top places in Ligue 1 again. At the same time, the departures of Bouaddi and Fernández-Pardo mean Ancelotti must find new leaders in midfield and attack. The new arrivals give him more options, but it may take time for them to settle into the team.
The Champions League will also be a major test. With games on two fronts, the coach will not be able to rely on the same starting eleven all the time. Lille therefore need not only a strong start to the season, but also substitutes capable of stepping in for first-choice players without significantly weakening the team.
